Stephen Spelman is an experienced trial attorney who represents businesses and individuals facing important and often complex legal issues and problems. As a prosecutor in the Homicide Unit of the Hampden County District Attorney's Office, Stephen Spelman tried more than 100 jury cases, including murder, narcotics trafficking, and financial fraud. Stephen Spelman has also tried civil cases in Federal Court and New York state court. His extensive experience in complex civil and criminal litigation began when he started his practice of law with the firm of Davis Polk & Wardwell in New York City. Stephen Spelman has been an adjunct Professor of Law at Western New England College School of Law, teaching White Collar Crime and Securities Regulation. He is a trial methods instructor for the National Institute for Trial Advocacy, and serves as a Master of the Bench for the Pioneer Valley Inn of Court. Stephen Spelman is admitted to practice in Massachusetts, New York, and Connecticut, and in various Federal District Courts and Courts of Appeals. Stephen Spelman served as a Colonel in the Judge Advocate General's Corps (JAG) of the U.S. Army Reserve. He served as the top criminal defense attorney for the United States Army while mobilized as Chief of the U.S. Army Trial Defense Service, supervising the defense of Army court-martial cases worldwide. He has also served two tours of duty in Iraq, one with Army Special Forces, the other as the senior military officer at the Law and Order Task Force - LAOTF. Stephen began his military career by enlisting in the Army as a Private. The Spelman family has lived in Hampden County for more than 250 years, contributing to the community by serving as attorneys, teachers, farmers, and business owners.
